Three Deadly Sins Job Searchers Make

By: David Rippentrop

Our current jobs are always in jeopardy of being downsized, phased out, renamed, outsourced, or some other term to let us know that we are “being let go.” Regardless of the extent of your skills, your outstanding results, and how high up the ladder you are, we all need to live the scout motto, “Be Prepared.” Your resume, interviewing skills, and personal job hunting process needs to be on going and up-to-date.

Many of us do everything possible to sabotage our job search, thus called the “Three Deadly Sins.”

#1. My Resume is perfect.

Once we create our resume, we refuse to make any changes. We treat it like it’s carved in stone. Many resumes are written in big blocks of words. Human Resources and Recruiters do not have the time to read and decipher these big blocks. The resume needs to be clean, easy to read, bulleted with “Wow” statements, and “dollarized.” Companies are very interested in your outstanding results and how much money you made or saved the company. Please spell check and always be honest!

#2. I’m Out of Here!

Many times employees make an emotional decision and quit their current position before they have another position secured. Understand that it generally ranges from three months to a year to gain proper employment. Some even employ a Career Coach to assist the process at a cost of $175 to $300 an hour. It is a skill to interview properly and an employment search is a full time job.

#3. My Resume is on the Internet…

Today we have to be very protective of our personal information. You need to keep control of who is looking at, and has possession of your resume. Many recruiters are the initial interview for many open positions. Realize that once your resume is sent or given by a friend to a client company, a recruiter cannot typically represent you for a year. Also, if the company already has your resume, they would have contacted you if you were a “fit.” Daily networking, designing a personal search process is essential to your job search success.

Now that you are aware of the most common mistakes, improving your employment search process should be easy. Knowing a great recruiter will also improve your chances of landing your next perfect position.
